Today’s Gospel: Matthew 18:1-5, 10
(Greatness in the Kingdom)
At that time the disciples came to Jesus, saying, "Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?" And calling to him a child, he put him in the midst of them, and said, "Truly, I say to you, unless you turn and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Whoever humbles himself like this child, he is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. "Whoever receives one such child in my name receives me; "See that you do not despise one of these little ones; for I tell you that in heaven their angels always behold the face of my Father who is in heaven.
Reflection:
Imagine God
asking Job, “Have you ever given orders to the morning?” What a glorious
question! The One who tells the dawn where to stand and knows the road to where
the light lives is the very same One who calls you by name. And Job’s answer is
the best one anyone can give: he goes quiet, lays his hand over his mouth, and
simply adores. A heart that has seen how big and how good God is can’t help but
tell someone.
And here’s the
twist that makes this all so exciting: this enormous God gives every one of us
a personal angel! In the Gospel, Jesus says the angels of the little ones always
see the face of the Father. Think about that. Your guardian angel has a
front-row view of the Father’s face and still keeps his eyes on you. You’re
walking around with a guardian who is connected to heaven! Jesus asks us to
become like children, and children, bless them, always seem to know they’re
never alone.
Every one of
those angels serves Beneath the Standard of Mary, because she is their Queen!
The first words of the Hail Mary are Gabriel’s own greeting, so every time you
pray a Rosary you’re singing in the choir with heaven, more than fifty times
over. So go out today and ask your guardian angel to run ahead and soften the
hearts you’re about to meet. Angels love a mission, and nothing delights them
more than bringing someone to Jesus.
Who has your
guardian angel been quietly leading you toward- someone who needs to hear about
Jesus? What would it look like to pray “Angel of God, my guardian dear” this
morning and then step out Beneath the Standard of Mary? Trust that the One who
commands the morning is already preparing the time that you will share Jesus
with others.
