Today’s Gospel: Luke 14:1-6
(Healing on the Sabbath)

Healing of the Man with Dropsy on the Sabbath. On a sabbath he went to dine at the home of one of the leading Pharisees, and the people there were observing him carefully. In front of him there was a man suffering from dropsy. Jesus spoke to the scholars of the law and Pharisees in reply, asking, “Is it lawful to cure on the sabbath or not?” But they kept silent; so, he took the man and, after he had healed him, dismissed him. Then he said to them, “Who among you, if your son so, ox falls into a cistern, would not immediately pull him out on the sabbath day?” But they were unable to answer his question.

Reflection:

Paul’s letter to the Philippians bursts with thanks: every time he thinks of them, he thanks God, and his prayers for them are full of joy! He is grateful for their partnership in the Gospel from the very first day. And here’s the promise: He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus. God doesn’t leave a job half-finished, my friends! He is still working on you and me, and He is still working through us with His Will.

In today’s Gospel, Jesus is invited to dinner, and in front of Him stands a man who is ill. Jesus doesn’t wait for a better day or a better moment; He simply heals him right there and sends him on his way. Mercy can’t wait! That’s the pace of the Gospel, and it’s a good one for us. A phone call, a visit, or a kind word that has been waiting for the right moment may be just what someone needs right now.

And want to see what completion looks like? Look at Mary. God began a good work in her at her Immaculate Conception and carried it to the Assumption, when he took her, body and soul, into heavenly glory. It is Beneath the Standard of Mary that we march toward the same finish line, with a Mother who has already crossed it and is cheering us on.

Who has been waiting for your phone call, your visit, or your prayer? What would it mean to them to hear from you today? Don’t wait for a better day, because the Lord who began a good work in you is already at work in them.
