Today’s Gospel: Luke 10:17-24
(The Return of the Seventy-Two)
“The seventy-two returned with joy, saying, "Lord, even the
demons are subject to us in your name!" And he said to them, "I saw
Satan fall like lightning from heaven. Behold, I have given you authority to
tread upon serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy; and
nothing shall hurt you. Nevertheless, do not rejoice in this, that the spirits
are subject to you; but rejoice that your names are written in heaven." In
that same hour he rejoiced in the Holy Spirit and said, "I thank you,
Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that you have hidden these things from the
wise and understanding and revealed them to babes; yes, Father, for such was
your gracious will. All things have been delivered to me by my Father; and no
one knows who the Son is except the Father, or who the Father is except the Son
and any one to whom the Son chooses to reveal him." Then turning to the
disciples, he said privately, "Blessed are the eyes which see what you
see! For I tell you that many prophets and kings desired to see what you see,
and did not see it, and to hear what you hear, and did not hear it.”
Reflection:
Job says
something wonderful at the end of his story: he had only heard about God
before, but now his own eyes have seen Him! Isn’t that every believer’s story?
Somebody told us about Jesus, and then one day we met Him ourselves. And look
how Job’s story ends, with God blessing his latter days even more than his earlier
ones. God wastes nothing, and He is never outdone with the generosity he always
gives to us!
Then the
seventy-two came back from their mission absolutely bursting with joy, and
Jesus rejoices right along with them! He thanks the Father for revealing these
things to the little ones. He tells His friends the best news of all, that
their names are written in heaven. Then He turns to them and says, blessed are
the eyes that see what you see, because prophets and kings longed to see it.
Whatever you have seen of Jesus, you are holding a treasure kings once longed
for.
Today is the
First Saturday of October, the Month of the Rosary! At Fatima, Our Lady asked
for something simple. On the first Saturday of five months in a row, go to
Confession, receive Holy Communion, pray five decades of the Rosary, and keep
her company for fifteen minutes as you meditate on the mysteries. Jesus praises the
Father for the little ones, and you can hear an echo of Mary's Magnificat. She
is the littlest of the little ones, and no eyes ever saw Him more lovingly than
hers. Beneath the Standard of Mary, the humble always win. So, give her this
Saturday, and bring Jesus to someone.
Who first told
you about Jesus, and have you thanked them lately? Who is out there waiting for
you to be the one who tells them? Give today to Our Lady and let her lead you
to the person who needs to hear your story.
