Today’s Gospel
is Jesus explaining His own parable of the sower, naming exactly what happens
to the seed that falls on the path, in the rocks, amongst the thorns, and in good
soil, and what kind of heart each condition represents. He doesn’t leave the
meaning a mystery for those who’ve asked sincerely; He explains it plainly to
them.
It’s worth
noticing that Jesus doesn’t explain the parable to the crowd; He explains it
privately to the ones who stayed close enough to ask. Understanding deepens in
proximity to Him, not from a distance. The people who get the fuller picture
are the ones willing to stay near long enough to ask the follow-up question.
Stay close
enough to Jesus today to actually ask the follow-up question instead of
settling for a surface read of your faith. Don’t just hear the parable and move
on; ask God plainly what it means for your particular soil, your particular
thorns, your particular distractions. He explains things to the ones who
linger, not the ones who walk away after the first sentence.
Today the
Marian calendar acknowledges the Foundation of Our Lady of Cambron in France, in
1148, a community built specifically around staying close enough to keep
asking, keep learning, keep deepening. Our Lady has always loved those who
stayed near her Son. Something to ponder today: Where have you settled for an unexplained
understanding of what Jesus has said, instead of staying close enough to Him to
ask for more, so that He fills your heart with deeper understanding?
