Our Lady of Buglose
France (1634)
Sts. Peter and Paul, Apostles -
Solemnity
Gospel: Matthew 16:13-19
Today’s Gospel
is the turning point of Peter’s whole story. Jesus asks, “But who do you say
that I am?” and Peter answers plainly, “You are the Christ, the Son of the
living God.” Jesus responds by handing him the keys of the kingdom, building
His Church on that one confession, on that one ordinary fisherman willing to
say what he actually believed out loud.
Plenty of
people in the crowd had opinions about who Jesus was: a prophet, John the
Baptist come back from the dead, and even Elijah. Peter is the one Jesus
actually addresses directly, and Peter is the one willing to answer personally
instead of repeating what other people thought. The keys went to the man who
said what he believed, not the one who deflected to the crowd’s opinion.
Answer the
question personally today instead of deflecting to what other people think. Who
do you say Jesus is, not what the world says, not what your family always told
you, but what you actually believe? That kind of honest, personal confession is
exactly what Jesus builds on, the same way He built His whole Church on Peter’s
answer.
On the
Solemnity of Saints Peter and Paul, we acknowledge Our Lady of Buglose in
France, 1634, a devotion built by ordinary people willing to say plainly what
they believed about her Son. Our Lady’s own confession at the Annunciation was
the most personal yes in history. Something to ponder: when’s the last time you
said out loud, in your own words, who you believe Jesus is?
