Today’s Gospel
holds the centurion who tells Jesus He doesn’t even need to come to his house,
just say the word, and his servant will be healed, and Jesus marvels, saying He
hasn’t found faith like this even in Israel. By evening, the same Jesus is
healing Peter’s mother-in-law and a whole crowd at the door.
The centurion
didn’t need proof to believe; he understood Jesus’ authority well enough to
know His word was sufficient. We sometimes ask for more proof than we need,
bigger signs, clearer confirmation, when Jesus has already shown He can do the
whole work with nothing more than His word.
Trust the word
today instead of waiting for the proof. Pray simply and plainly, without
demanding the dramatic proof first, and trust that He’s just as capable of
healing from a distance as up close. Faith like the centurion’s isn’t certainty
earned through evidence; it’s trust in the authority of the One speaking.
Our Lady of
the Dorade in Toulouse is remembered today. Our Lady has never needed to be
physically present to help; her intercession reaches just as far as the
centurion’s faith did. Something to consider: Where have you been demanding
proof instead of simply trusting in God’s Word and Promise?
