Today’s Gospel
closes the Sermon on the Mount with a warning about the difference between
hearing and doing: “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the
kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father.” Jesus continues
with the two builders, one on rock, one on sand, a firm foundation, especially
in our faith, is so important.
It’s possible
to say all the right words about faith and still be building on sand, going
through the motions, sounding and looking devout, without the actual doing in
your life. The storms of ordinary life are what expose the foundation, not the
words we used to describe it beforehand.
Build on rock
today by doing one thing your faith actually asks of you, not just saying that
you believe it. Don’t make it a performance of devotion; instead, if you're finding
it a challenge in your heart, forgive the person, make the call, give the help,
say what is hard, but say it in truth. Words are easy to build on; obedience is
the only foundation that holds when the storm actually comes.
Today, the
Church celebrates the Divine Motherhood of Our Lady, declared at the Council of
Ephesus in 431, a truth the Church didn’t just say, but defended and built its
understanding upon Jesus Christ. Our Lady’s own yes was never just words; it
was the one thing her whole life was built upon. Something to sit with: Where
is your own foundation? Is it all talk, and not built on a solid foundation?
Focus fully on Jesus with all your heart, fall in love with Him.
