"They
all joined together constantly in prayer, along with the women and Mary, the
mother of Jesus." - Acts 1:14
She Who
Prayed the Fire Down
After the Ascension, the
Apostles went back to Jerusalem and gathered in the Upper Room. They were
eleven ordinary men, fishermen, a tax collector, a zealot, who had been told to
go to the whole world and preach the Gospel. They had no strategy, no
resources, and no power.
What they had was Mary.
She was there in the Upper Room,
praying with them during those ten days between the Ascension and Pentecost.
She had already lived everything; they were only beginning to understand. She
had said yes to the angel. She had carried the Word made flesh. She had stood
at the Cross without running. She had seen the Risen Lord. She knew things
about her Son that no theology could fully contain.
And so she prayed with them. She
did not preach. She did not lead meetings or draft plans. She prayed. When the
Holy Spirit fell on Pentecost like fire, Mary was there. She had been there
from the very beginning of everything. The Church was born in a room where she
was praying.
This is her queenship over the
Apostles. Not rank, not authority, not a title in any hierarchy — but the
irreplaceable presence of a mother who knew how to pray and who taught the
Church to do the same.
Today's
Gospel - John 14:2731
Jesus said: "Peace I leave
with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give it to you.
Let not your hearts be troubled, and do not be afraid."
Before He left, He gave them
peace. Then He sent the Spirit. Then, in the Upper Room, Mary prayed the Spirit
down upon them all.
The sequence is everything: His
peace, His Spirit, her prayer, their fire. Nothing in that chain is incidental.
Our Lady, Queen of the Apostles, was not a passive bystander to Pentecost. She
was the praying heart of the Church waiting to be born.
She is still that. When we feel
unequipped, when the mission seems too large for us, we go to the Upper Room in
our hearts. We find her there. And we pray.
A Prayer
Our Lady, Queen of the Apostles,
you who prayed the Holy Spirit down upon the first disciples, pray for the
Church today.
Pray for missionaries in
dangerous places. Pray for priests who have grown weary. Pray for the faithful
who feel alone in a world that no longer recognizes what they believe. Gather
us all in the Upper Room of your intercession.
And pray for me. I am not an
Apostle, but I have been sent into my family, my neighborhood, my workplace,
with the same Gospel. I need the same fire. Ask for it on my behalf. You know
how.
Our Lady, Queen of the Apostles,
pray for us. Amen.
Reflection
Mary did not preach the first
sermon. She prayed the first prayer of the newborn Church. Her role was
irreplaceable, even if it was quiet.
Do you undervalue the power of
simply praying for someone? Who in your life is on a mission right now, in ministry, in a difficult family situation, experiencing a hard season, someone who needs you to be in their Upper Room today? Ask the Lord to guide your heart.
