"A great sign appeared in heaven: a woman
clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of
twelve stars." - Revelation 12:1
The
Crown and the Child
May
belongs to Mary. It has for centuries.
In
parishes around the world today, a young girl dressed in white will walk slowly
up the aisle carrying a crown of flowers. The congregation will sing. And with
the simplest gesture imaginable, a child placing flowers on a statue, the
Church will say everything May is meant to say: we love you, Mother. This month
is yours.
The
May crowning is one of the oldest and most tender devotions in Catholic life.
It asks nothing complicated of us. No theology degree required. Just flowers, a
song, and a willing heart. Yet in that simplicity lives something profound,
because Mary is not crowned by kings or councils. She is crowned by her
children. That is exactly how she would want it.
She
is Queen not by conquest but by love. She reigns not over subjects but over
hearts. Her throne is not a palace room but the quiet place inside a soul that
has said yes to her Son.
What
kind of queen runs to help her pregnant cousin? What kind of queen stands at
the foot of a cross when she could have walked away? The kind we have. The only
kind worth following.
Today's
Gospel - John 14:1-6
On
the night before He died, Jesus looked at His frightened friends and said:
"Let not your heart be troubled. In my Father's house, there are many
mansions."
He
was telling them, and us, that there is a place being prepared. A destination.
A home at the end of the road. And He is the way to get there.
Mary
has always known this. Her whole life was a yes to the way, the truth, and the
life. She carried that way in her own body. She stood by that truth at the
Cross when the whole world was shouting otherwise. She now lives that life in
heaven, assumed body and soul into the place Jesus went to prepare.
When
we crown her Queen of the May, we are not just honoring a beautiful tradition.
We are pointing toward our own destination. She got there first. She is
waiting. And she is interceding every moment to make sure we find our way.
A Prayer
O
Mary, Queen of May, we crown you today not with gold but with what we have, our
prayers, our love, and our renewed desire to follow your Son.
Reign
in our hearts this month. When we are distracted, call us back. When we are
discouraged, remind us of the Father's house being prepared for us. When we
forget to pray, tap us on the shoulder the way only a mother can.
You
are our Queen not because you demand it, but because love earns it. Lead us,
your children, all the way home.
Hail
Mary, full of grace, reign in our hearts today. Amen.
Reflection
Jesus
said He is the way, and Mary has spent two thousand years pointing people
toward that way without ever pointing to herself.
Who
in your life right now needs someone to quietly point them toward Jesus? How
could you, like Mary, do that today without making it about you?
