Today's
Readings
Acts
6:8-15 Stephen,
filled with grace and power, worked great wonders among the people. His
opponents could not withstand the wisdom and the spirit with which he spoke.
They stirred up the people against him, but his face was like the face of an
angel.
John
6:22-29 The crowd
followed Jesus, looking for more bread. He said: Do not work for food that
perishes, but for food that endures for eternal life, which the Son of Man will
give you. When they asked what work God requires, He replied: "This is the work
of God, believe in the one He sent."
Today's
Thread: The only work that lasts.
The crowd wanted
more bread. They had seen the miracle of the loaves and wanted a repeat. Jesus
redirects them completely; you are chasing the wrong thing. There is a food
that endures, and it comes from Me.
Stephen is living proof of what it looks like when a
person has found peace and love in Jesus. He is full of grace and power. His enemies cannot
defeat his arguments. Even when falsely accused, his face shines. He has
consumed the Bread of Life, and it is working through him.
Living
It Today:
You are going to
work hard today. Some of what you do will endure, and some of it will not. The
work of God, believing in the One He sent, is what threads through all of it
and gives it eternal weight.
Do not let the busyness of today crowd out the one
necessary thing. A moment of real belief, real surrender, real communion with
Jesus is more productive in the eternal economy than ten hours of frantic
religious activity.
Something
to sit with today:
What are you
working hardest for right now? Is it food that perishes or food that endures?
How would your day look different if you genuinely believed that belief itself
is the primary work God asks of you?
Stephen's face shone even in a false accusation. What
does it look like when a person is that deeply rooted in Christ? Is there even
a trace of that quality in your own face?
