Today's Readings

Acts 7:51 - 8:1a Stephen addressed the Sanhedrin: "You stiff-necked people, you always oppose the Holy Spirit. They gnashed their teeth at him. He saw the glory of God and Jesus at the right hand of the Father and declared it. They dragged him out and stoned him. He prayed: Lord, do not hold this sin against them. And Saul approved.

John 6:30-35 The crowd asked Jesus for a sign. Moses gave manna in the desert. What will you do? Jesus said: it was not Moses who gave you the bread from heaven. My Father gives you the true bread from heaven, which comes down and gives life to the world. I am the Bread of Life. Whoever comes to me will never hunger; whoever believes in me will never thirst.

Today's Thread: The Bread of Life does not run out.

Stephen is being killed. His final words are not a cry for justice; they are a prayer for mercy on the men murdering him. He is so saturated with the Bread of Life that even death cannot empty him.

And Jesus has just said it plainly: I am the Bread of Life. The sustenance that actually satisfies. Stephen proved that this claim was not just theology; it was enough to carry a man through his final breath.

Living It Today:

You may not be stoned today. But you may face a moment where you are called to respond with something you do not naturally have: patience, mercy, or forgiveness. Ask Jesus, the Bread of Life, to feed you before that moment arrives.

Saint Anselm, remembered today, was a man of deep prayer and brilliant theology. He famously said: Faith seeking understanding. He did not wait to understand before he believed. He believed, and the understanding followed. The Bread came first.

Something to sit with today:

Is there someone in your life right now whom you have not yet forgiven? Stephen forgave as he was being killed. What is your excuse? Bring that name to the feet of Jesus, the Bread of Life, today, and ask Him to give you what you cannot manufacture yourself.

When was the last time you came to Jesus specifically hungry, not with a to-do list, but with a real need to be fed? What would that kind of prayer look like for you today?
