June 25 - Divine Motherhood of Our Lady, declared at the Council of Ephesus (431) This is perhaps the most theologically significant day of June, commemorating the Church's solemn declaration that Mary is truly Theotokos - the God-bearer. At Ephesus, the Church definitively proclaimed that Mary is the Mother of God, not merely the mother of Christ's human nature. This dogmatic definition protects both Mary's dignity and the mystery of the Incarnation itself. It affirms that the child in Mary's womb was truly God made man, and therefore Mary's divine motherhood makes her the highest of all creatures, worthy of veneration above all saints and angels.

The ancient icon, venerated since the 13th century, depicts Mary holding the Christ child while angels present the instruments of His future passion. This image beautifully captures Mary's role as our perpetual helper - she who intercedes for us constantly, bringing our needs to her Son with unfailing maternal love. The devotion teaches us that Mary's help is not occasional but continuous, available to us at every moment of our lives, especially in our greatest trials.

June 28 - Institution of the Angelus of Our Lady, Europe (1456) This marks the formal establishment of one of Christianity's most cherished prayers. The Angelus recalls the Annunciation three times daily, inviting all Christians to pause and remember the moment when "the Word became flesh." Through this prayer, instituted across Europe in 1456, the faithful join with Mary in her "yes" to God's will. The Angelus bell calling people to prayer has sanctified countless ordinary moments, transforming daily work into worship and reminding us that Mary's openness to God's plan changed the course of human history.

Prayer for June

Loving Mother Mary, as we journey through the month of June, we honor you under the many beautiful titles by which your children have invoked you throughout the centuries. From the ancient shrines of Egypt and India to the medieval sanctuaries of Europe, you have shown yourself as our constant guide and protector. We thank you especially for your role as Our Lady of Consolation, bringing comfort to all who suffer, and for the Church's solemn declaration at Ephesus that you are truly the Mother of God, Theotokos, the God-bearer who gave flesh to the eternal Word. Help us to turn to you with the same trust that moved the faithful of Luxembourg, Germany, France, and Italy to build shrines in your honor and to seek your Perpetual Help in all their needs.

Sweet Mother, as we pray the Angelus throughout these June days, may we echo your perfect "yes" to God's will just as you spoke it at the Annunciation. From the Star of Aquileia to the forests of Brittany, from the hills of Lombardy to the streets of modern cities, your maternal love reaches every corner of creation. Grant that through all these devotions remembered in June, we may grow closer to your Son Jesus, following your example of humble service and complete surrender to the Father's plan. May the saints and mystics who received your apparitions and heard your voice intercede for us, that we too may be worthy of your guidance and protection. Lead us always to Jesus, O Mary, and help us to live as faithful children of our heavenly Father. Amen.
